The legislation would simplify acquisition and remove federal regulations on the accessory.
Representative Mike Cloud of Texas and Senator Mike Lee of Utah introduced the Silencers Help Us Save Hearing (SHUSH) Act, to remove federal restrictions on firearm suppressors. Currently classified under the National Firearms Act (NFA), suppressors require extensive paperwork, fingerprinting, photographs, a $200 tax, and a months-long approval process.
The bill would remove suppressors from the NFA and Gun Control Act (GCA), prohibit state-imposed taxes or registration, and streamline access for law-abiding citizens. The act would also allow active and retired law enforcement officers to carry suppressors concealed. Congressman Cloud and Senator Lee claim that current regulations are excessive and place unnecessary burdens on responsible gun owners.
Senator Lee said, “Despite what Hollywood may lead you to believe, silencers aren’t silent, and they aren’t just for secret agents. They are a vital tool for hearing protection for countless marksmen and gun enthusiasts across America, and making them prohibitively difficult to obtain is an assault on the Second Amendment. The SHUSH Act eliminates federal regulation of silencers and treats them as the non-lethal accessory that they are.”
